Hyundai has issued a recall for 568,580 Palisade SUVs due to an issue that may prevent the seatbelts from latching correctly.

Recall documents show that the belt latches for the driver, passenger, and second-row window seats are potentially faulty.

The recall covers Palisades from the 2020 through 2025 model years.

Hyundai is recalling 568,580 Palisade SUVs because of potentially faulty seatbelt latches. The recall population covers Palisades from the 2020 through 2025 model years. Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that an estimated 1 percent of the recall population is affected by the fault.

According to the recall documents, the belt latches in the driver, passenger, and second-row window seats may not latch correctly, which increases the risk of injury in a crash. The documents show that owners may be warned of the fault through a lighter-than-normal “click” sound when fastening their seatbelt. As a backup, the Palisade is also equipped with visual and auditory warnings if the belt becomes unlatched.

The issue with the belt latches stems from components that were built out of specification by a supplier. The out-of-spec components can apparently interfere with the latch channel and increase friction—especially when there are colder ambient temperatures—which may keep the belt from fully latching.

According to NHTSA, it is safe for owners to continue driving the recalled Palisades, though they are advised to fasten their seatbelts “with a quick and direct motion” and to double-check that the belt is fully latched. Owners of affected models will be urged to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for inspection and possible replacement of faulty latches. The service will be free, regardless of whether the affected vehicle is under warranty or not.

By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.
